Savaria Through-Floor Lifts Offer Innovative Two-Stop Home Access
If you’re looking to age-in-place, need accessibility inside your home, or want an alternative to a stairlift to avoid using the stairs, a Savaria through-floor lift can be an ideal solution. We offer three models of through-floor lifts: the Luma lift, the Telecab and the Telecab 17 lift. With similar benefits to a home elevator, but with less cost and no hoistway construction needed, through-floor lifts have become more popular recently with people wanting to remain in their existing home as long as possible.

Through-floor lifts, by code, are limited to two-stops. They travel through a floor-cutout and use a floor plug to close off the floor/ceiling cutout as they land at the lower level. The space needed for a through-floor lift varies by model, with the Luma lift needing only a 38” by 47” footprint. The Savaria Telecab models require a support wall for installation, whereas the Luma lift is freestanding.
Through-floor lifts are different from home elevators
Although some companies market their through-floor lifts as “home elevators”, a through-floor lift differs in the following ways:
Home elevators use automatic operation, meaning that when you push the button once to go to the desired floor, the elevator travels there automatically. This is the way that a commercial elevator operates. Through-floor lifts use constant or continuous pressure buttons meaning that you press to hold the button to move and when you release the button, the lift stops.

Through-floor lifts require some construction preparation, but less than a full home elevator installation. If you need the lift for wheelchair accessibility the Telecab models are larger and can accommodate wheelchairs and scooters. The Luma lift can accommodate rollators and walkers. Both models have features for mobility concerns including a sloped entrance, non-skid flooring, a sturdy handrail and constant pressure (press-to-run) buttons.
Whether you choose the modern looking Luma lift, or the wheelchair accessible Telecab model, you can take comfort in the many safety features and fully enclosed cab with automatic lighting.

A traditional home elevator requires a constructed hoistway. The hoistway typically requires about 5 feet by 5 feet on all levels of your home. Adding a home elevator to your existing home is more difficult and is normally done with a major renovation. A through-floor lift requires less site preparation.
For the Luma lift, a floor-cut is needed as well as reinforcement of the floor/ceiling cut-out area. The Telecab requires this same preparation, along with reinforcement of a support wall because the Telecab travel tower is secured to a wall on both levels.
More information about preparation is available in the planning guide for each model.
