Savaria doors and gates

How the Elevator Gate and Landing Door Work Together

Your Savaria home elevator requires both an elevator car gate and a fixed landing door. The elevator gate is fixed to the elevator and travels with the cab. It can only be opened when the elevator stops at the desired landing. The elevator will not move if the gate is open. The landing door is fixed to the wall at each landing and must include the Savaria interlock system that prevents anyone from opening the landing door into the hoistway, unless the elevator is at the landing.

Gates and doors are a critical part of the safety of your elevator as well as the aesthetic for the finished look of your elevator in your home. If your elevator has only one entrance, you will need one gate. If your elevator has more than one entrance, you will need a gate for each entrance, and the gates can be a different style from one another if desired.

Choose Your Cab Gates

Savaria offers several different types of gates. Some gates are operated by hand, meaning that you will need to use the handle to pull them open or shut. Most clients opt for motorized gates which will open automatically once the elevator is safely at the landing.

Accordion-folding gates

Accordion gates fold up to one side and are offered in many styles. To meet safety code, they use a hard hinge to minimize deflection – meaning that the gate has minimal flex and remains rigidly in place when shut. Accordion gates can be manually operated or motorized for automatic operation.

Clearfold

Clearfold gates feature an aluminum frame with clear acrylic panels.

Visifold bronze

Visifold bronze gates feature an anodized bronze frame with tinted acrylic panels.

Panelfold clear

Panelfold clear gates feature anodized aluminum frames with 3 clear acrylic panels. The remaining panels are available in wipe-clean antique white, or bright white vinyl inserts.

Solid white

Solid white gates feature anodized aluminum frames with solid white wipe-clean vinyl panels.

Perforated

Perforated gates are made of aluminum with a perforated pattern. They are available in clear or bronze anodized, or in painted black.

Bi-Fold gates

Bi-folding doors part in the center and fold to each side. The are available in stainless steel finish, or in architectural white powder coat paint. Bi-folding gates come with automatic operation only. Choose from stainless steel finish,or painted architectural white. Bi-fold gates are finished on the interior side of the cab. On the exterior side, the gates are not finished as they open automatically once elevator has stopped, therefore the exterior side is not visible.

Scissor-style gates

Scissor gates have a vintage look and are available in black with manual operation only.

Auto Slim luxury gates

Automatic slim gates operate more like commercial elevator doors as they slide open automatically. When paired with the auto slim doors, they work together to provide fully automated operation in an elegant asymmetrical design (3-speed). Auto slim gates are available in stainless steel, blackened stainless steel, brushed brass, and a variety of powder coat colors. You can also order these gates in metal framed glass. The exterior side of the auto slim gates appear somewhat unfinished as they operate automatically and are therefore not visible on the exterior side.

Choose Your Landing Doors

A landing door is required for every level/landing of your Savaria home elevator. There are critical measurements to meet safety code when choosing and installing a landing door. This is referred to as the ¾ and 4 rule. To ensure that your elevator meets this standard, Savaria offers several options for landing doors.

Auto Slim doors

For the ultimate luxury, many people choose auto slim doors to complement their auto slim gates. Paired together, they operate automatically like a commercial-style elevator, but with a much slimmer depth and threshold to suit a home environment.

Auto slim doors Finishes

Auto slim doors can be ordered with the same finishes as auto slim gates: stainless steel, blackened stainless steel, brushed brass, and a variety of powder coat colors, as well as framed glass in stainless, blackened stainless, brushed brass or a choice of paint colors in powder coated frames.

How to make your supplied swing door meet safety code

If you want the landing door to look like the rest of your home’s doors, your local contractor can supply the landing door. However, the door must meet the ¾ and 4 rule when installed.

The easiest and best way to do that is to use the contractor-supplied slab door along with the Savaria luxury flush frame. The luxury frame comes assembled with installed hidden hinges and a template to install the door interlock, as well as the interior emergency release mechanism.

The luxury flush frame-only kit is available in the same sizes as listed above.

Please note that non-flush swing door installations will not meet safety code unless a door spacer is used. Savaria dealers cannot install elevators that do not meet this safety code standard. Read more about Door/gate safety
